GHG Protocol and ISO are building one standard

A company doing carbon accounting today reads two sets of standards: GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1.

On 29 July 2026 came an announcement that the two are to become one.

What is being brought together

The scope is "GHG Protocol's Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3 and Action and Market Instrument (AMI) standards, and ISO's 14064-1 standard", and the outcome is "a single co-branded corporate standard".

A timetable came with it. Public consultation on the integrated corporate standard is scheduled for Q2 2027. A standard development plan (SDP) document for the integrated corporate standard was posted on the same date.

The announcement positions this as a key milestone on the COP30 action agenda.

Scale

The recent Scope 2 consultation drew close to 1,100 responses from 56 countries. Consultation on the integrated standard folds those processes into one.
